- Where did you move to? Why did you move? How old were you?
Perché si è trasferito all’estero? Quanti anni aveva?
I moved to Glasgow at the age of 25, immediately after my master’s degree, because I had won a traineeship as an Italian language assistant at the University of Strathclyde.
Mi sono trasferito a Glasgow a 25 anni, subito dopo aver ottenuto il mio master, perché avevo vinto una borsa di studio come assistente di lingua italiana all’Università di Strathclyde.
- What are the main differences between Italy and the UK in your opinion?
Secondo lei quali sono le principali differenze tra Italia e Regno Unito?
It’s not easy to answer this question, because I could notice many differences even between the English and the Scottish, between the Glaswegians and the Edinburghers!
Anyway, it is true that the British tend to be colder and more detached compared to the Italians. It’s not easy to make friends at first.
However, this also means that they always appear polite and respectful.
Non è semplice rispondere a questa domanda poiché ho potuto notare molte differenze tra gli Inglesi e gli Scozzesi, tra i Glaswegians e gli Edinburghers!
In ogni caso è vero che i Britannici tendono a essere più freddi e distanti rispetto agli italiani.
Non è semplice fare amicizia, all’inizio.
Comunque ciò vuole anche dire che risultano sempre molto educati e rispettosi.
- Did you find difficulties during the integration process?
Ha avuto difficoltà ad integrarsi?
Not really, but I have to admit that I worked in an international institution and met plenty of foreign people after work, so I didn’t see many local people actually.
Non molto ma devo ammettere che ho lavorato in un’istituzione internazionale ed incontrato molti stranieri dopo il lavoro perciò, in realtà, non ho visto un gran numero di locali.
- How was your life before moving to London?
Com’era la sua vita prima di trasferirsi?
I had a typical university student life: I studied a lot for my exams, went to the movies or art exhibitions, did some gigs and travelled as soon as I could.
Avevo una tipica vita da studente universitario: studiavo molto per i miei esami, andavo al cinema o alle esibizioni d’arte, facevo qualche lavoretto secondario e viaggiavo appena potevo.
- Are there any stereotypes you find true about England?
Vi sono alcuni stereotipi che trova veri sull’Inghilterra?
As I said, the British are reserved and polite.
But it is also true that after a couple of pints of beer at the pub they suddenly become friendly and easy going.
Last but not least, I can confirm that their eating habits are rather questionable!
Come ho già detto, i Britannici sono riservati ed educati.
È anche vero, però, che dopo qualche pinta di birra al pub diventano improvvisamente amichevoli ed estroversi.
Ultimo, ma non per importanza, posso confermare che le loro abitudini gastronomiche sono abbastanza contestabili.
- Did you have misunderstandings caused by language?
Ha mai avuto delle incomprensioni causate dalla lingua?
An incredible amount! Scottish English -and the variety spoken in Glasgow even more – sound incomprehensible at first, because they’re highly influenced by the Gaelic pronunciation.
So I often happened to misunderstand my neighbours, bus drivers, waiters, etc…
Un incredibile ammontare!
L’Inglese scozzese (e ancora di più la versione parlata a Glasgow) suona incomprensibili all’inizio, dato che sono altamente influenzati dalla pronuncia gaelica.
Per questo spesso mi è capitato di fraintendere i miei vicini, gli autisti del bus, i camerieri ecc…
- Have you ever been a victim of prejudice?
È mai stata vittima di pregiudizio?
No, just very few jokes about the Italians’ habit of gesticulating.
No, solo pochissimi scherzi sull’abitudine italiana di gesticolare.
- Why would you recommend having an experience abroad?
Perchè raccomanderebbe fare esperienze all’estero?
Not only does it help you improve your language skills and broaden your horizons, but it also allows you to feel part of another country and mindset, which is always an enrichment.
Non solo aiuta a migliorare le tue abilità linguistiche ed allargare i tuoi orizzonti ma permette anche di sentirsi parte di un’altra nazione e di un’altra mentalità, il che è sempre un arricchimento personale.
- Did you find any weird daily habits?
Ha trovato qualche strana abitudine quotidiana (inglese)?
Probably leaving the swimming pool without drying one’s hair.
Given the appalling weather conditions, I would have been hospitalized!
Probabilmente lasciare la piscina senza asciugarsi i capelli.
Date le condizioni meteorologiche io sarei stato ospedalizzato!
- What’s your English favorite word?
Qual è la sua parola inglese preferita?
Drizzle.
It sounds good when you utter it and makes reference to the typical British rain.
Drizzle.
Suona bene quando la dici e si riferisce alla tipica pioggia britannica.
- Did you visit the UK before moving there?
Aveva visitato Londra prima di trasferirsi?
Yes, I had already been to London and Edinburgh.
